Drawing Closer Through Fasting
Drawing Closer Through Fasting
There are moments in life when our hearts feel heavy, our minds feel cluttered, and our spirits feel distant. In those seasons, God invites us into something deeper - not more noise, but more of Him. Though some might believe Biblical fasting is about punishment, Scripture tells us that it will help us grow a more intimate relationship with Christ and will open our eyes to what God wants to teach us.
We see examples of fasting in both the Old and New Testament, and even Jesus fasted (see Matthew 4:1-11)
When we fast, we are telling God that we need Him more than we need anything else.
It is in the quiet surrender of fasting that God begins to heal what’s broken, restore what’s been drained, and speak where there has been silence.
Fasting empties us of distractions so we can be filled with His presence
Scriptures to meditate on
Joel 2:12 “Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting…”
Matthew 6:18 “Your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”
Simple Action Steps
1. Replace, don’t just remove
When you skip a meal or give something up, don’t leave that space empty, fill it with prayer, worship, or the Word. That’s where the power is.
2. Set a Clear Focus
Go into your fast with intention.
Ask yourself: “Why am I fasting? Am I seeking direction, healing, peace, or breakthrough?”
Write it down and pray over it daily.
Lord, as I lay aside the things that feed my flesh, fill me with what feeds my spirit. Draw me closer to You. Heal my heart, renew my mind, and speak clearly into my life. I surrender this time to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
