What It Really Means to Trust in God
What It Really Means to Trust in God
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6
Trust ...... It’s a word we say easily, but living it out daily is another story.
Trusting God isn’t just a comforting phrase we place on a coffee mug. It is a lifestyle, it is a relationship, it is obedience, and it means to surrender every area of our lives.
What does trusting God truly mean?
1. Trusting God Means Leaning Not on Your Own Understanding
Proverbs 3:5–6
Trust begins where self-reliance ends. Our understanding is limited. Our vision is short. But God sees the beginning from the end. When we lean on our own reasoning, we walk in circles. When we lean on Him, He directs our path.
2. Trusting God Means Calling Out for His Help
Psalm 86:2–3
Trust is not silent independence, it is a bold dependence. When we cry out to God in prayer, we admit we cannot carry the weight alone. Calling on Him is not weakness, it is faith in action.
3. Trusting God Means Following Even When It Feels Crazy
Deuteronomy 1:31–36
Sometimes God’s instructions don’t make sense to our human minds. The Israelites struggled because the journey felt uncertain. Yet trust means walking forward even when the path looks impossible. Faith often feels risky, but disobedience costs far more.
4. Trusting God Means Publicly Acknowledging Him
Psalm 91:2
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress…”
Trust is not private, it speaks, it declares, and it boldly proclaims who God is in your life. When you publicly acknowledge Him, you strengthen your faith and encourage others.
5. Trusting God Means Entering into a Relationship with Him
Isaiah 12:2
Trust isn’t religion, it's a relationship. God is not a distant figure to believe in occasionally. He is a personal Savior to walk with daily. Trust grows when intimacy grows.
6. Trusting God Means Rejecting Other Gods
Psalm 40:4
Anything we rely on more than God becomes an idol: money, approval, comfort, even control. Trust requires choosing Him above all else. You cannot cling to God while clutching substitutes..
7. Trusting God Means Flourishing
Romans 15:13, Psalm 52:8
Those who trust God are described as joyful, peaceful, and planted like thriving olive trees. Trust produces stability. Even in drought seasons, the roots go deep.
8. Trusting God Means Obeying His Ways
Titus 3:8
Trust and obedience are inseparable. If we say we trust Him but refuse His instructions, we deceive ourselves ~ real trust acts.
9. Trusting God Means Saying No to Fear
Psalm 56:4
“When I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”
Trust does not mean fear disappears, it means fear no longer decides. You choose faith over feelings.
10. Trusting God Means Remembering Him
Psalm 78:7
We trust better when we remember what He has already done. Forgetfulness fuels doubt. Remembrance strengthens faith.
11. Trusting God Means Vindication
Isaiah 25:9
God defends those who wait on Him. Trust means you don’t have to fight every battle yourself. He sees, He knows, and He will act.
12. Trusting God Means Salvation
Romans 4:5
At its core, trust begins with salvation, believing that God justifies the ungodly through faith. We don’t earn it. We receive it by trusting Him completely.
Trusting God is not a one-time decision, it’s a daily surrender.
It’s choosing His wisdom over your logic, His timing over your urgency, His peace over your panic, and His ways over your will. Trust is not passive, it is powerful. Those who truly trust Him will never be disappointed.
Heavenly Father,
Teach us what it truly means to trust You. Forgive us for the times we have leaned on our own understanding, clung to fear, or placed our confidence in other things. Help us to call on You quickly, follow You boldly, and obey You fully, even when it doesn’t make sense.
Plant our hearts deeply in Your truth so we flourish in every season. Strengthen us to publicly declare that You are our refuge and fortress. Remind us daily of Your faithfulness so we never forget who You are.
We choose today to trust You completely, with our past, our present, and our future.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
