Counting My Blessings

Still Counting My Blessings

Choosing Gratitude When Weariness Sets In

“I lift up my eyes to the hills,

where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121:1–2

There are seasons when life feels heavy, when responsibilities pile up, prayers feel unanswered, and weariness quietly settles into our hearts. Even as believers, we can find ourselves tired in body, mind, and spirit. Weariness doesn’t mean we lack faith, it means we are human, but what we do with that weariness makes all the difference.

The psalmist reminds us to lift our eyes, not because the hills hold our answers, but because looking up reorients our hearts toward the One who does. Our help does not come from ourselves, our strength, or our ability to push through. Our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

We believe God is in heaven. We believe Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. Sometimes in the middle of our exhaustion, we forget another powerful truth: the Spirit of God lives within us. That same Spirit gives us inner strength when our outer strength is gone.

Weariness often comes when our focus slowly shifts, from Jesus to our circumstances, from gratitude to pressure, from trust to self-reliance.

The cares of this world have a way of draining us when we stare at them too long. Scripture calls us to consider Jesus and to fix our eyes on Him rather than the weight we are carrying.

One of the greatest tools God gives us to overcome weariness is gratitude. Gratitude doesn’t ignore the struggle, it lifts us above it.

When we intentionally count our blessings, even in hard seasons, our perspective changes. We begin to remember who God is, what He has already done, and how faithful He has been. Gratitude shifts our hearts from scarcity to abundance, from exhaustion to hope.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

 Hebrews 12:2

When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we stop trying to be our own source. We stop carrying what was never meant for us to carry alone. God never designed us to run on empty. He designed us to draw from Him.

Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.”

Colossians 3:1–2

Looking upward doesn’t remove our responsibilities, but it reminds us we are supported. When gratitude becomes our response, weariness loses its grip. Thankfulness fuels faith, and faith renews strength.

Therefore we do not lose heart… For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

 2 Corinthians 4:16–18

Some days, counting blessings feels like a sacrifice. But it is often in those very moments that gratitude becomes the doorway to renewal. God is our source, not our energy level, not our emotions, and not our circumstances. When we choose to look up and thank Him, despite our feelings or circumstances, strength follows.

We may grow weary, but we do not grow without hope. As long as our eyes are on Jesus, there is always more grace to carry us through.

Action Steps

1. Turn gratitude into a daily practice.

Each day, write down or speak aloud three things you are thankful for. Let gratitude become your spiritual reset when weariness creeps in.

2. Refocus your eyes intentionally.

When you feel overwhelmed, pause and pray: “Jesus, I choose to fix my eyes on You.” Allow that moment to shift your focus from pressure to peace.

Father God,

We come to You weary, yet hopeful.

You see every burden we carry and every silent struggle in our hearts. Help us to lift our eyes to You again, to remember where our help truly comes from. Thank You for the gift of Your Spirit living within us, strengthening us when we feel weak. Teach us to count our blessings, even in hard seasons, and to trust You as our source. Renew our strength, restore our joy, and help us to fix our eyes on Jesus daily.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
