Decisions, Decisions! Do Your Decisions Matter?

Decisions, Decisions!

Decisions, decisions we all have to make them!

Decisions matter. The choices we make today will show how we want to live our life, and those choices will create our future. Sometimes we make wrong choices without realizing the consequences that can come about from those decisions.

There is a quote by Dan Pena that says, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future”.

As adults, we make an average of 35,000 decisions everyday, ranging from small, simple choices to bigger, more significant ones. There are different types of decisions we make:

Routine Decisions – These are choices we have to make everyday that require minimal thought, like what to wear or what to eat.

Problem-solving Decisions – These involve attacking challenges or figuring out how to fix something. It can also be resolving conflict in a relationship.

Relationship Decisions – Here is where Dan Pena's quote comes into play. We get to choose our interactions with others, including making the decision who our friends will be and who we surround ourselves with.

Value-based Decisions – These decisions are motivated and guided by our core beliefs, what we value, and for Christians, the most important decisions we make. We pray and seek after God's Will for these decisions.

Do our decisions go against what the Bible says? If we trust in God and His Word, ALL of our decisions will be based on what the Word says.

Psalm 119:105 “Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path”.

God has given us His Word to help us live a better and more righteous way in accordance to His wishes and His will.

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will”.

At one point of my life I made the decision to walk and live by faith. I know now that it was the best decision I have ever made. Of course, at that time, I did not have a clue what that would look like. I just made that decision because of what the Word of God said in Hebrews 10:38, “The just shall live by faith”.

From that time on, I had to begin making decisions based on the Word of God rather than on my circumstances.

When a person makes their choices based on what the Word says, faith starts to rise up. The word ‘faith’ in Hebrew is ‘emunah’. It implies trust in God, loyalty, and reliance upon Him, and that is what I wanted. I made the decision to trust and rely on God.

During my early walk with the LORD I knew my choices and my decisions were not always going to be easy. I began to establish myself in what the Word said with unwavering resolve, instead of making decisions based on my emotions and circumstances. This was not always an easy thing to do. I still, today, have times that I have to pray and push through those more difficult situations. But since trusting and relying on God, I can tell you with all honesty - the more I did it God's way, the easier it became.

Here's something that many people realize, but some don't. If you think you don't need to make a decision, or you refuse to make one, you’ve actually made one.

We need wisdom to make right choices and decisions. The Proverbs of Solomon and the Psalms are full of wisdom.

One of my favorite verses in Proverbs is found in chapter 3:5-6. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. In all of your ways, acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”

I found getting the wisdom of God about how to move forward has made life a lot easier. I started to seek and study different verses in the Bible about letting God show me and guide me through this life. I found one of those verses in the book of Galatians 5:16 that says, “let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.”

The decisions we make really do matter!

It is true that today is a result of yesterday’s choices. Well then, that would mean that tomorrow will be a result of today’s choices.

As I continued to walk with God, I would listen, day after day and for many hours, teaching tapes on faith. I meditated through different stories and situations from the Bible in my prayer time. I would think about what I’d do if faced with those same situations. Would I love the same things God loved? Would I hate the things that God hates? I wanted to prepare myself as much as I could when faced with difficult areas of my life. Thinking back, it did help me make better choices. I made wiser decisions because of my faith.

Andy Stainly calls them “good life guardrails”, where we bump into them before we go over the cliff of destruction. Without these guardrails, we open ourselves up for the enemy to come in to kill, steal, and destroy (see John 10:10).

This is why it is so important to focus on what the Word says when making decisions. Talk to God about what’s going on in your life. He wants us to speak with Him and just spend time with Him. James 1:5 “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” Psalm 32:8 tells us, “The LORD says, ‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you’.”

In order to make sound and biblical choices, we must know God’s Word, not just from head knowledge, but from the heart. Psalm 119:11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

An AI overview explains it more: This verse is a powerful statement about the importance of internalizing and cherishing God’s Word. “Your word I have hidden in my heart” emphasizes the act of storing God’s Word not just in the mind, but in the heart, the seat of emotions, affections, and desires. “That I might not sin against you” highlights the practical benefit of hiding God’s word: it serves as a shield against sin and a guide for living a life pleasing to God.

As Christians, our decisions are often made during our meditation, prayer, and worship times. We find our victory during fellowship with God. We go from glory to glory when we live a life of victory over sin and death!

So, as a believer, let your faith rise up and take control over your flesh and emotions. When you do this, quality, faith-based decisions come about.

Because of God’s wonderful gift to us ~ free will ~ ultimately, we are the ones who make the final choices and decisions. Be prepared and choose wisely. Do not wait until you are faced with needing to make a hasty decision. Making that decision ahead of time will ensure your success.

Speak the Word

“I am not conformed to this world. I am transformed as I renew my mind. And I prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” —Romans 12:2
