The Power of Your Words

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Proverbs 18:21  

Friends, Have you ever yielded your tongue in faith? Yielding is a spiritual concept where a person chooses to surrender control of their speech to the Holy Spirit. It means letting go of your own will to speak words of praise and truth rather than harmful or negative things.

Have your words been filled with life, love, grace, and kindness? Or have they been marked by anger, jealousy, fear, bitterness, envy, criticism, or hopelessness?

What words are you speaking today, not only to those around you, but also to yourself?

As Christians, our words should produce healing and encouragement to those around us, and reflect the fruit of the Spirit, not become poisoned by lies the enemy tries to whisper in our ears.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Ephesians 4:29

We all should do a heart check on ourselves every now and then. This is holy heart work that each of us must do before God. It requires us to slow down, search our hearts, and honestly ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what has been flowing from our mouths.

When it comes to this, I can be my own worst critic. I've spent far too many years speaking to myself with words I would never dream of saying to someone else. I've replayed failures, focused on flaws, and believed lies that were never spoken by my Heavenly Father.

I realize now, that is not my portion, and that is not where God intends for me to live.

God never created His children to become their own worst enemy. He desires for us to walk in His truth, His grace, and His love. He wants us to learn to speak to ourselves with the same compassion He has shown us.

Maybe you've spent years trying to earn everyone's approval. Maybe you've chased perfection until you've exhausted yourself. Maybe you've looked in the mirror and only noticed everything you wished you could change.

Friend, perfection was never the goal.

Jesus didn't say, "Come to Me when you've finally become perfect."

He simply said, "Come."

He wants us to come with our brokenness, our scars, and our questions. God wants us to come exactly as we are, in order for Him to transform us from the inside out.

When we begin to love ourselves through the eyes of Christ instead of through the lens of shame, something beautiful happens. The blinders begin to fall away. We begin seeing ourselves as God sees us, not as damaged goods, but as beloved sons and daughters still being lovingly shaped by the Master Potter.

The enemy wants us to believe we are ugly, worthless, forgotten, or beyond repair.

God says something entirely different.

"I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14

The words you speak over your own life matter.

Every harsh word you repeat becomes another brick in a wall of insecurity.

Every truth from God's Word becomes another stone in a firm foundation of faith.

Today, stand in front of the mirror for a moment. Who do you see? Do you see someone broken beyond repair and still carrying old wounds? Do you see someone filled with shame?

Now, begin to see an unfinished masterpiece, a child of God who is still being transformed by His loving hands.

God isn't finished writing your story. Don't allow the enemy's lies to become your identity.

Choose to speak what God says about you instead. His truth is always louder than the lies when we choose to believe it. 

Action Steps

1. Pay attention to your words today. Every time you catch yourself speaking negatively about yourself or someone else, pause. Replace those words with a biblical truth. Let God's Word become louder than your inner critic.

2. Practice speaking life. Look in the mirror and declare three truths from Scripture over yourself. Then intentionally speak words of encouragement to someone else today. Life multiplies when it is shared.

Father,

Thank You for reminding me that my words carry incredible power. Forgive me for the times I've spoken death instead of life, not only over others, but over myself. Forgive me for agreeing with the enemy's lies instead of standing firmly on the truth of Your Word.

Lord, teach me to yield my tongue to You each day. Let my speech be filled with grace, kindness, gentleness, and wisdom. Guard my heart, because I know my words flow from what is hidden there. Heal every wounded place within me that still believes I am not enough. Remove every lie of rejection, shame, insecurity, fear, and worthlessness, and replace them with Your everlasting truth.

Help me to see myself through Your eyes. When I look into the mirror, let me see someone You delight in, someone fearfully and wonderfully made, deeply loved, fully forgiven, and continually being transformed into the image of Christ.

May my words become instruments of healing instead of hurt, encouragement instead of criticism, hope instead of despair, and blessing instead of cursing. Let my home be filled with words that build up my family, strengthen my children, encourage my friends, and point others toward Jesus.

When negative thoughts try to rise again, remind me to fight back, not with my own strength, but with the truth of Scripture. Help me remember that I belong to You, that my identity is found in Christ alone, and that no lie from the enemy can ever overpower Your truth.

Today I choose life.

Today I choose hope.

Today I choose the truth.

Today I choose to speak as a daughter who knows she is loved.
