What Is Good
What Is Good?
"He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8
Do you ever wonder what is truly good? Have you ever sat quietly and pondered what actually pleases God?
In a world full of conflicting messages, it can be difficult to know what is right and what is wrong. What was once considered good is often called evil, and what God calls sin is frequently celebrated by society. If we're not careful, we can become confused by the noise around us and lose sight of God's truth.
The world is constantly trying to define goodness according to its own standards. Social media, television, culture, and even well-meaning people, may tell us what they think is right. Yet opinions change, trends come and go, and popular beliefs shift with the times. God's truth, however, never changes.
So where do we find truth? We go to the source.
The source is God's Word, the Bible. It is God’s written message to us, filled with wisdom, instruction, correction, encouragement, and truth. When we want to know how God desires us to live, we don't have to guess. We can open His Word and discover His heart.
Micah 6:8 gives us a beautiful picture of what God requires ,to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with Him. These simple yet powerful instructions reveal God's desire for His children. He wants us to treat others fairly, extend mercy generously, and remain dependent upon Him rather than ourselves.
God's Word doesn't merely tell us what to believe, it teaches us how to live. It shows us how to love, forgive, serve, and honor Him in our daily lives.
But let's be honest, living according to God's standards isn't always easy.
There are times when people hurt us deeply. Sometimes we are betrayed, misunderstood, rejected, or treated unfairly. In those moments, our flesh cries out for revenge. We may want to get even. We may want to speak harsh words or make someone feel the same pain they caused us. Yet God's Word calls us to something higher.
Jesus said:
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." Matthew 5:44
That isn't easy. In fact, it may be one of the hardest commands in Scripture. But rest assured, God never asks us to do something without also providing the strength to obey Him.
When we surrender our hurt to God, He helps us forgive. When we feel anger rising within us, He reminds us of the mercy He has shown us. When we want revenge, He teaches us to trust His justice instead.
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21
The world says fight fire with fire. God says overcome evil with good.
The world says get even. God says forgive.
The world says look out for yourself. God says love others.
The world says follow your heart. God says follow His truth.
As followers of Christ, we must continually choose which voice we will listen to. Will we allow culture to shape our beliefs, or will we allow God's Word to transform our hearts?
Every day presents opportunities to love God and love people. Sometimes that means extending grace when it isn't deserved. Sometimes it means choosing humility over pride. Sometimes it means praying for someone who has wounded us. These choices may not always feel good in the moment, but they produce fruit that honors God and reflects His character.
When we live according to His Word, we become a light in a dark world. Others begin to see the love, mercy, and goodness of God through our actions.
Action Step
Today, take a few moments to ask yourself:
Is there an area of my life where I've been listening more to the world's voice than God's Word?
Is there someone I need to forgive or pray for?
How can I intentionally show kindness, mercy, or humility today?
Choose one practical way to demonstrate God's love before the day ends. It may be a phone call, a prayer, a word of encouragement, or an act of forgiveness. Small acts of obedience often lead to great spiritual growth.
Dear Heavenly Father,
It's not always easy to do what You ask of us. The world constantly pulls us in different directions and tries to convince us that its way is best. But Your Word is truth, and Your ways are higher than our ways.
Help us to walk in obedience even when it is difficult. Give us strength to choose forgiveness over revenge, kindness over bitterness, and humility over pride. Teach us to love those who hurt us and to pray for those who oppose us. Let Your Word be the guide for our hearts, our thoughts, and our actions.
Lord, help us to love You wholeheartedly and to love Your people well. May our lives reflect Your goodness, mercy, and grace in everything we do.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
