When You Feel Like You're Failing
When You Feel Like You're Failing
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9
Have you ever looked around at your life and wondered if you're getting anything right?
Lately, I've found myself walking through a season of transition. The children who once needed me for everything are becoming young adults. One is learning to drive and another is stepping into new responsibilities. Freshman years turn into senior years, and before you know it, the little hands you once held tightly are reaching for independence.
As parents we spend years teaching, guiding, correcting, encouraging, and praying, and then suddenly we find ourselves in a new role, not controlling every step, but coaching from the sidelines. It can all be so frustrating at times, not because I don't want them to grow, but because growth often takes longer than we expect. Character takes time, maturity takes time, learning from mistakes takes time, and finding their own faith takes time.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering, "Did I do enough? Did I teach them what they needed? Why aren't things moving faster?" That is the time when the enemy loves to whisper the lie that we're failing, but God reminds us that growth is always been a process.
A farmer doesn't plant seeds one day and harvest crops the next. There are seasons of planting, watering, waiting, and trusting before the fruit appears. Parenting is much the same.
The truth is that feeling weary doesn't mean you're failing.
Feeling stretched doesn't mean you've done something wrong.
Feeling uncertain doesn't mean God has abandoned the work He began.
Many of us are carrying burdens that no one else sees. We are praying prayers that haven't been answered yet. We are believing God for prodigal children, stronger marriages, healing relationships, financial breakthroughs, and spiritual growth. We know what God has promised, but the waiting can be difficult. The hardest part is often not the work itself, it's the waiting.
Yet Scripture reminds us that our hope is not found in circumstances or timelines. Our hope is found in Jesus.
"Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6
God is still working.
He is working in your children.
He is working in your family.
He is working in you.
Even when you cannot see immediate results, heaven sees every prayer you've prayed, every sacrifice you've made, and every seed you've planted..
Another verse that encourages my heart is found in Hebrews.
"And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." Hebrews 12:1-2
Notice where our focus belongs not on our failures, fears, or frustrations, but on Jesus.
When we focus only on what hasn't happened yet, discouragement grows. When we focus on Christ, hope grows.
The reality is that transition is hard. Watching our children become their own people is hard. Letting them wrestle with questions, discover their own faith, and learn life's lessons firsthand can feel painful.
God never asked us to produce the harvest.
He simply asked us to be faithful in planting the seeds.
Action Steps
1. Celebrate Progress Instead of Perfection
Take a few moments today to write down three ways you have seen growth, either in yourself, your children, or your circumstances. Thank God for every small victory. Remember, progress is still progress.
2. Release What You Cannot Control
Spend time in prayer and intentionally surrender your worries to God. Your children, your future, and your unanswered questions are safest in His hands. Trust Him with what you cannot fix.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for meeting us in seasons of weariness and uncertainty. When we feel like we're failing, remind us that You are still working. Help us trust Your timing when growth seems slow and answers seem delayed.
Strengthen every parent who is walking through transition. Give us wisdom to guide, grace to release, and faith to trust You with the people we love most. Help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and not on our fears.
Thank You that You are faithful to complete the work You have begun in us and in our families. May we continue planting seeds of faith, hope, and love, knowing that in Your perfect timing, there will be a harvest.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
